If you CAN'T defend yourself while standing and on the ground then you
DON'T know how to defend yourself....
95%
of all self-defense situations end up on the ground or in the grappling
range... Grappling is the most neglected range of self-defense in most
martial art systems.
At
Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts Academy, we teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,
Sombo, Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing and Submission Wrestling. At the crux
and core of our grappling system is Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art that was popularized in America by the
legendary Gracie family. Jiu-Jitsu concentrates on dominating your
opponent by using angles, leverage, and superior body positioning to
control an opponent’s body movement. A person that has a
superior position is in a better situation to apply a finishing hold or
to start striking. This style allows for a smaller person to defeat a
much larger attacker. Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for women who are often
taken to the ground during assaults. We recommend this style for men,
women, and children looking for a great workout and realistic
self-defense. Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu is similar and,
in some cases, both supplementary and complementary to the Olympic
Sport of Judo. In our
curricula, we believe that it is not only important to control our
opponent on the ground, but also on our feet. Therefore, we have taken
the proactive approach of marrying the arts of Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Sombo, and Submission Wrestling.

If you
live in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia area you have the rare
opportunity to personally train with a Martial Arts Legend. No where
else in the Maryland, Virginia and DC area can you personally train
with such a highly decorated competitor and coach.
Are
you out of shape? Haven't worked out in years?
Never done something like this before?
Well
it doesn't matter
We have
specific classes that were designed to meet the needs of a brand new
student that is attending for the very first time. Many new students
think that you should get in shape on your own before starting
training. That is the furthest thing from the truth. You’ll
absolutely love the easy and relaxed environment we have set up in our
beginner fundamental classes.
It will allow you to come in and learn no matter what type of shape you
are in.
| GRAPPLING IS WAY
TOO HARD |
I’ve
heard that there are people that think grappling is WAY TO HARD and are
hesitant to give it a try. This is the furthest thing from the truth.
Actually it’s pretty funny. It’s a misconception. I
guess some people think that if they come to learn that someone is
going to throw them into the Ultimate Fighting Championships. WRONG!
Grappling
is FUN first and foremost and doesn’t require any previous
experience. Anyone can do it, big people, small people, young people,
older people, flexible people, non flexible people, experienced people,
non experienced people, ANYONE.
If you
have ever thought that Martial Arts training may be for you I would
urge you to come in and see our program for yourself. I guarantee that
you’ll absolutely love it; we can help meet any of your needs.
I
know it may sound like I'm
begging, but the fact of the matter is
that I AM.

RAVE REVIEW
"I can't say
enough about how
grateful I am to have met and trained with such an extraordinary man
and group of people."
"I
moved to Maryland from Indiana this summer with the impression that my
training was going to suffer. Facing the possibility of being away from
my team and instructor (James Clingerman) for the summer was bad
enough--the fact that I had a scheduled MMA fight waiting for me back
home with the possibility of training myself for it was tantamount to
disaster. When James recommended that I look into Lloyd Irvin's
jiu-jitsu program, I was expecting a group of people to roll with once
or twice a week to keep me fresh...still dreading that the majority of
my training would alone. What I got, however, was a blessing....a full
gym, consistent training partners (some of whom were females with high
rank, which is an AWESOME and rare commodity most places), and daily
classes with an emphasis on both fundamental and advanced training.
When I mentioned to Master Lloyd that I was training for a fight, he
designed a personalized conditioning program for me, which has left me
in the best shape of my life. I have found that in training he
continually pushes his students to improve their game, both in
examining the group as a whole and pinpointing the exact areas that
each individual student needs to improve. The support I have received
at LIMMA has helped improve not only my jiu-jitsu and NHB technique,
but my overall sense of self on the mat...my weaknesses and strengths
(physical AND mental) are pointed out to me daily and corrected with
patience and understanding. What's more, there has ALWAYS been someone
of high rank or experience available to answer any question I might
have at any given time. I can't say enough about how grateful I am to
have met and trained with such an extraordinary man and group of
people"

When
it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you've come to the right place!
There
are many different factors that play into choosing the right school. We
feel that the most important factor should be getting what you pay for.
What you are paying for should be first-rate instruction and a friendly
environment in which to learn. When you train at Lloyd
Irvin’s Martial Arts, you will be training under highly
trained instructors who go through a grueling 10-week instructor
training course twice a year with Master Lloyd. Customer service is one
of our main priorities. Whatever you need, our staff will be there to
assist you.
One
thing that separates our school from all of the others is that we have
a specialized system (curriculum) that we teach. This system is one of
the secrets to our team’s success. Most schools have no
curriculum and basically the instructors teach whatever may pop into
their heads each night for class. We believe in setting short-,
intermediate-, and long-term goals, and then putting a plan in place to
reach each of these goals.
Also
Team Lloyd Irvin doesn’t just concentrate on helping students
develop their skills technically and physically, but also MENTALLY!
Master Lloyd is the world’s leading expert on Developing
Mental Skills for grappling.
Don't
take our word for it.

The purple belt
division is known as
the most exciting tournament class of them all. With less pressure on
their shoulders and great technical skills, purple belts go for it like
no other fighters. This proved to be the case at the Nationals as Lloyd
Irvin's Mike Fowler stole the show!
Fowler
has been competing in and winning just about every tournament in the
nation and his performance
at the Nationals showed why Fowler is not only a great athlete and
extremely technical, but he also has the heart of a lion. Fowler won
his weight with a submission in the finals and then went on to capture
the Absolute with a gutsy performance against Asa Fuller. Asa,
outweighing Fowler, maintained his traditional pressure throughout the
match, many times almost passing Fowlers guard. Fowler maintained his
composure, however, and pulled a pair of triangle attempts out of
nowhere to win the match by advantage.

No
matter if your interest is in fitness, self-defense, or just to have a
great time,
you'll
love our program.
As we
have developed our students’ abilities, we would like to do
the same for you. We believe that martial arts presents a holistic
approach to the development and building of moral character, grounded
ethics, sportsmanship, and fair play. These intangibles, along with the
ability to defend oneself, are immeasurable and beneficial to all
individuals.

NHB Training
Master
Lloyd has fought NHB - winning all of his matches. He has also helped
train some of the biggest names in the sport of No Holds Barred
Fighting and prepared them for events like the
UFC, Pride Championships, Rings, and Extreme Challenge,
just to name a few. We take a world-class approach to training in all
of our disciplines and are ALWAYS trying to improve it.
No
Holds Barred (NHB) competition isn’t for everyone. But if you
have an interest in NHB, want to train at a school that can prepare you
for NHB, or just want to experience the great mental and physical rush
that comes with NHB training, we can help you.

Middleweight Champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort in
preparation for a UFC bout.
One
thing that separates our school from most of the others is that we
practice what we preach. All of our instructors get out in the mix so
that we can constantly learn and refine our techniques. You can be
assured that what you are learning from our instructors is being
practiced by some of the best fighters in the world.
Shown here is Master Lloyd after training in NHB with some of the
biggest names in Brazil - the world-famous Brazilian Top Team (BTT)
Gracie Barra, fighter and the newest member of Chute Boxe; Nino 'Elvis'
Shembri who is considered one of the most dynamic ground fighters in
the world; BTT Paulo Filho who is regarded as one of the top fighters
in the world; BTT Ricardo Arona who many feel is the #1 contender to
face Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva in the
Pride Championships; American Top Team Sensation Dustin Denes, BTT Alan
Goes, and Master Lloyd’s personal friend and fraternity
brother, Daryl Gholar, who is basically responsible for training all
the top fighters in Brazil in wrestling.
Our
students interested in NHB fighting have competed in almost every major
show in the country. Our instructors learn and grow so we can give our
students the best possible instruction available.

RAVE REVIEW
"I had many
martial arts schools to
choose from, some only 1-2 miles from my home. But I choose to drive a
100 mile round trip to Lloyd's. I think that speaks alot to the type of
training that is available at Lloyd's."
"I
started training with Lloyd in January of 2000. I came to his classes
as a complete beginner in grappling, no experience at all. In fact, I
was very apprehensive to be grappling at all. Within 3 months and only
training 3 days a week, I won my first grappling tournament, beating 2
blue belts, one by submission. I had no idea Lloyd's training would be
so effective. I was 215 pounds and my first match was against a 315
pound giant. I will be honest, I was nervous, but I used Lloyd's
techniques and got the submission in under 30 seconds. I never doubted
myself again or the effectiveness of the training I was receiving from
Lloyd. And what was funny is that I was injured for a month during that
3 month period I was training, so in reality I only trained maybe 2
months for my first tournament. Lloyd encouraged me during my injury
period, telling me to keep my head up and to continue to mentally
train. I never had a coach take so much time out of his own personal
schedule to help me. I had major injuries in college from playing
football that were devastating to my psyche, so when Lloyd called and
e-mailed me to check on me on a daily basis for the month I was out, I
felt like he cared for me and for my personal growth. And all this for
a beginning student. Over the next 3 years, I drove 50 miles, one way
to train with Lloyd 4-5 times a week.
I
had many martial arts schools to choose from, some only 1-2 miles from
my home. But since I had been involved in higher level athletics and
understood the type of environment that I would need to make me the
best I could be, I chose to drive a 100 mile round trip to Lloyd's,
even battling the Wilson Bridge every day! I think that speaks alot to
the type of training that is available at Lloyd's, WORLD CLASS.
Lloyd
encouraged me to train my hardest every day and always told me, "if you
aren't moving forward, you are moving backwards". I use this motto all
the time, and even when I cannot make practice, I use the mental and
physical techniques Lloyd has shown me to get better in my off time.
Lloyd has trained me for Mixed Martial Arts fights over the past 3
years, in fact I won my first fight with only one year of training, and
it was by KO. I won my second fight by submission in under 30 seconds.
Lloyd mentally prepares his athletes as well as I have ever seen a
coach do for his athletes.
I was competitively involed in football for 17 years. I had some really
intense coaches over the years who worked very hard to help me achieve
my goals, but none rival Lloyd's complete approach to developing an
athlete of sound mind and body. Some of the coaches I had are now
involved in the NFL and are coaching at the highest level of college
football, but once again, none of them rival Lloyd's attention to
detail, mental development, and physical conditioning of their
athlete's like Lloyd Irvin. He has taken me to my physical and mental
limit during the periods of time when I have trained for fights, but
one thing, he makes it fun and mentally conditions me to think of
success, not failure. Lloyd
is always about success, 100% of the time. He never seems to have time
to talk about failure or negativity, it's 100% positive..."
